Thinking

Ideas in progress

This is where the thinking behind the practice lives — the questions I keep returning to, stated plainly while they are still being worked out. Longer essays will be published here as they are written.

  1. Published conceptual research

    Adaptive Organisational Engineering (AOE)

A published conceptual framework on the architecture through which complex human systems produce outcomes. The paper itself sets out propositions and constructs that require refinement and empirical testing.

  2. Governing design principle of AOE

    Bounded Adaptability

Relative stability for purpose, commitments, governance, interfaces, standards and outcomes — with adaptability preserved in methods, workflows, tools, internal structures and local practices.

  3. Ongoing interest

    Gamification beyond points

Motivation as part of the design of learning itself, rather than a reward layer added afterwards — carried forward from postgraduate research into personalised e-learning.

  4. Ongoing interest

    Strategy before platforms

Why organisations often buy technology before deciding what they intend to become, and what a more deliberate sequence looks like in practice.

A note on publishing

I would rather publish a small number of ideas I can stand behind than fill this page with volume. The topics above are genuinely in development; where something is unproven, it is labelled as such.

The research context behind several of these ideas is set out on the Research page. If you’d like to discuss any of them, get in touch.
